Some of you may have already experienced Akimbo, a new on-demand subscription service, and Adventv (Turkish On-Demand Service for North America) using a TV connected to the Akimbo Player or Akimbo Media Center connected to your wired or wireless home network and a PC.
Akimbo programming is not scheduled; you request a title when you want it (Akimbo's slogan: "Your wish is on-demand.") However, you must download each show at a speed dependent on your broadband connection, sometimes taking as long as the length of the actual program.
To avoid yet another set-top box to an already congested home entertainment system, Akimbo says the service (not yet HDTV-ready) could be built into DVRs, cable/satellite receivers, Media Centers, networked DVD players and game consoles. Overall, the Akimbo concept has long-term potential, especially for Turkish-American members. Of course, Adventv (and the Turkish audience) represents just one segment of Akimbo. The service currently has over 85+ channels (representing thousands of programs mostly in English), with new ones added each week.
For more information visit Adventv's site. Akimbo player (storing over 150 hours of digital-quality video) is currently available for $69.99 with a monthly subscription of $9.99 (or $199.99 lifetime) from Akimbo.
