Update: The movie has been released. Read the latest news about the movie and its premiere, as well as the trailers.
I recently posted about a couple of movies that each had great impact on the Turkish public relations scene over the last 20 plus years. One is 'Midnight Express,' arguably the greatest one of anti-Turkish proportions as any to date, and the other 'The Man Who Saves The World,' a light science-fiction comedy with well intentions but not the brightest display by any sense of the imagination.
Now, in the interest of turning the tide about the image of Turks and Turkey, and everything Turkish, comes 'Broken Angel,' a project which is dear to me, involving a film based on the novel, 'Ruzgarli Sehir,' to be shot in Los Angeles about a girl who comes to America with big dreams but soon discovers life here is not so easy.
Amerikan Turk beat me to it when he mentioned this project on his blog last week. And Bridge to Turkiye Fund (BTF) sent out a press release, which was posted on the Amerikan Turks Yahoo! Group today, announcing the teaming up with "Broken Angel LLC, the company behind the film project Broken Angel." They also add that, "BTF has been designated as Broken Angel LLC's favorite charity, allowing BTF to receive a portion of the funds generated by this production."
As an active participant, at least as bestowed on me by Leslie and Aclan, the husband-wife team of filmmakers, and great people with high hopes and grand ideals, I strongly encourage your wholehearted support for this project. In terms of how you can impact it the most, raising the necessary funds to start filming and complete the process is of greatest importance. A distribution rights deal with the largest company of its kind in Turkey has already been signed, and many renowned actors, including Nehir Erdogan, have already committed to the project.
Please click here for an interview with Aclan and Leslie Bates-Buyukturkoglu on StarTV (in Turkish.) Please be patient while it loads. It's definitely worth it. I am so proud of both of them and their individual, as well as team accomplishments.
I am truly impressed by what I have seen and heard, both in terms of reading the prospectus, as well as having had a chance to work with them on a small scale as part of their successful production of 'East Side Story' and its well-received performances in Los Angeles by the Istanbul National Ballet.
I am pleased to endorse 'Broken Angel,' and the ongoing fund raising efforts. 'Broken Angel' will be the first film conceived and financed by the Turkish-American community with popular international appeal. This is a great opportunity for people who want to be proactive in responding to the irresponsible 'Turk bashing.' For years, we've wanted an opportunity for better representation but with a quality product, and even had our own ideas regarding the same. I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to finally do something about it. Let us put our money where our mouth is. And proudly proclaim our part in making this movie possible when we finally get to watch it on the big screen with our family and friends, both Turkish and American.
