The latest news coming out of Turkey is that the opposition parties have decided not to be present on the floor of the Turkish Assembly during the vote for the President by the Turkish Parliament. This shows a lack of maturity and a lack of respect. Too bad for them that the message by the 'silent' majority in Turkey will be loud and clear at the next general elections.
The 'technical' requirements of having to elect the president in the first round (with more stringent headcount requirements) have never been a necessity in the past (as presidents have been elected in latter rounds as the headcount rules are relaxed and a simple majority presence is enough) and it will not be on this one either. The opposition simply does not care for the present government and the present ideology more so than in the past. They have made their real intent very clear by their latest actions. It is they and not the governing party who are choosing not to play by the rules of the game. It is they who are now at the last minute asking for a change in the rules of the game.
But they fail to understand this is what democracy is all about, and one must be ready to face the facts as a result. They (the opposition party leaders who 'dictatorially' lead their sheep into staying away from assembling on the floor - even when they could vote 'no' but still be present as democracy requires it) will be forced to respond for their immature and unprofessional actions. BUT it looks like democracy is still at work even after these childish attempts to maneuver around it. I am disgusted by the 'actions' of the opposition! And I now sympathize even more with the current government! I wonder if there are others who feel the same way!
