The grandson of Sultan Abdulhamid II, and the eldest member of the Ottoman Dynasty who lived most of his life in exile (mostly in New York City) died in Istanbul at the age of 97.
His funeral was attended by thousands, including state ministers, and, according to CNN International, an "eclectic mix of mourners -- stylishly dressed members of the royal family who grew up in Europe, alongside fervent Islamists."
