what's the meaning of

  • TALK TURKEY

Did you know 'talk turkey' is a US term first recorded in 1824, but is probably much older; one suggestion is that it goes back as far as colonial times.

But the meaning of the phrase seems to have shifted down the years. To start with it meant to speak agreeably, or to say pleasant things; nowadays it usually refers to speaking frankly, discussing hard facts, or getting down to serious business.

But more importantly, did you know that the original settlers in the US called the fowl (turkey) they had known in Europe because it was thought to come from Turkey.

Some also say that Christopher Columbus took some of the wild turkeys of North America back to Europe. Merchants from Turkey may have been trading some of these birds so they came to be called "turkey birds."

So let's 'talk turkey' not only to help fight cultural illiteracy but to exchange information and ideas without regard to radical conspiracy. Have Fun!
